I would like to take a little time to talk about HIV and AIDS. HIV is the human immunodeficiency virus that leads to AIDS, the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome that results in the destruction of the immune system leading to an inability to fight off certain infections and death. The virus is transmitted either sexually, through the blood, in breast milk or during pregnancy or birth from an infected mother to their child. According to the 2005 WHO and the Joint UN program on HIV/AIDS report an estimated 40 million people are living with HIV worldwide as of the end of 2005 and almost 5 million people were newly infected in 2005 alone. There were an estimated 3 million deaths from HIV and AIDS in 2005 with approximately 2.4 million of those occuring in Sub-Sahara Africa...we must wake up...we must wake up!
